party-ready garage...

this is what you do with living room furniture when *someone* replaces it for your kid's graduation... a pop-up living room in the garage!

knot... NOT

as in not a boy scout and not a sailor.

quick fix for wireless failure on a macbook pro

Wireless went out on my work computer. That sucks because I'm waiting for a refresh to arrive that has been ordered. Unfortunately, I'm traveling and need wireless as I can't find any coffee shops around here that will let me plug in to do my work!

I needed a quick fix fast. Since macbooks have built in wireless and have for years, the market for add-on mac wireless networking isn't the greatest. Since I'm currently in southern Alabama and needed my wifi to work today (Monday), I was limited to something I could get together yesterday (when I'd discovered that my buggy wireless card had finally given up the ghost).

I found a Netgear WNA1000M at a nearby Radio Shack and, of course, it has no OSX software with it. I stood in the store waving off the two sales associates and did some quick searches on my phone for "driver wifi mac osx netgear" and one very helpful link came up:

I'm going to repeat some of Mr. Goodliffe's information here not to steal credit for it but to, hopefully, make it easier for people to find. (Hence, my direct reference to his blog entry.)

Suffice it to say, the info from that 2012 blog post is still relevant on Mavericks. I'm running OSX 10.9.3.

It looks like all of the download packages for OSX 10.8 are the same. I downloaded the one from theRTL8188CUS section.

Here was my process:
  1. download drivers for OSX 10.8 (had to do on another machine and copy over via jump drive as I had no wifi...)
  2. unzip download file
  3. run installer.pkg and make sure it installs with no error
  4. once installed, then... THEN... open the packaging on your Netgear equipment. (if the driver install doesn't work, you can still return an unopened package)  ;-)
  5. Plug the adapter into an open USB slot and the Wireless Network Utility should launch.
  6. Then... add a profile for the network you're on and poof...  INTERNETS!
